Giving Back To Our Community
At Portland Luggage we believe in a responsibility to give back to our community. We have a long-standing tradition of being involved with worthwhile charities. Portland Luggage has established our own programs, as well as joining the efforts of other local charitable programs. These include:
GOING GREEN: Portland Luggage strives to be a "Green Company", supporting renewable & responsible energies such as wind & solar power. Our recycling program insures that absolutely everything that can be is recycled or re-used, therefore keeping tons of items from local landfills.
The SUITCASES FOR KIDS program is a joint effort between the Portland Metropolitan Rotary Club, The Child Welfare Department & Portland Luggage Company, which provides travel items for foster children moving from one family home to another. Many children are left in a demeaning position of stuffing & packing personal items--many with close family attachments--into garbage bags, cardboard boxes or other ill-equipped containers. This can be embarrassing for these children when they are trying to adjust into a new living environment.
"We found that many foster youngsters are faced with packing their clothing and personal belongings into cardboard boxes, grocery bags, even plastic garbage bags"
-- Portland Metro Rotary Secretary Douglas Porter
Portland Luggage collects usable suitcases & other items for foster children. As an incentive for customers to bring in their suitable items for donation, both Portland Luggage locations offer customers up to 20% off purchases for customers who donate a suitable item (such as a suitcase, duffel bag, or backpack). Usable & repairable items are distributed to the Midtown Branch of The Child Welfare Department, facillitated by J. D. Devros, on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
Chuck & Bruce from the Luggage Doctors at Portland Luggage are here with J. D. Devros, Supervisor of the Adolescent Unit of the Midtown Branch of the Child Welfare Department. Behind them are just a small portion of the bags that have been distributed to foster children through our Suitcases for Kids Program, in conjunction with the Portland Metropolitan Rotary Club.
With J. D.s assistance, we have also partnered with Andrew Skidmore, a Consultant in the Behavioral Rehabilitation Services of Albertina Kerrs Foster Care Program. Albertina Kerr has the distinction of being named The 2nd Most-Admired Non-Profit Organization in Oregon in a recent survey conducted by The Portland Business Journal.
To date, over 1000 items have been donated to foster children & their families!
Abel from Portland Luggage & Bonnie from the Make-A-Wish Foundation show the suitcases that will go to Hayley & her family for an exciting trip to Disneyland!
Hayley happily receives her Hey's "Disney Princesses" suitcase from the Make-A-Wish Foundation & Portland Luggage Company!
Chuck & Morgan pose with some of the many suitcases & bags that go to a local Women's Shelter. These bags will provide these women with a means to pack, so that they may leave their current situation and begin a better life. Portland Luggage also makes regular luggage donations to the homeless living in the Downtown Portland area.
Here, at the Portland Festival Symphony, children are seen playing musical recorders which have been donated by Portland Luggage.
