Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot that can develop in a deep vein. This usually occurs in the legs. DVT is a very serious condition as these clots can dislodge and travel through the veins to vital organs of the body. This can result in severe injury or even death.
Prolonged sitting (or any other physical immobility) for an extended period of time is a risk factor for Deep Vein Thrombosis. This can occur while travelling on long flights or car rides and has gained the moniker 'Traveller's Thrombosis' or 'Economy Class Syndrome'. There are other risk factors including recent surgery or hospitalization, advanced age, infection, obesity, immobilization, tobacco use, cancer, blood-clotting disorders, pregnancy, and the use of certain drugs such as oral contraceptives or hormonal therapy.
Possible signs of DVT are pain, swelling or redness in the leg(s). Please see a physician immediately if you feel this is a possibility.
One of the products we carry, Travelsox, uses gradual compression to increase circulation in the legs, reducing swelling. Studies have proven that compression socks reduce the risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis. Some other ways to reduce risk:- On flights, stand up and walk around as conditions allow
- Regularly move your ankles and legs. Change leg positions and stretch
- Do not cross your legs at the ankles or knees
- Avoid tight clothing
- Stay hydrated
